Today, lenses for eyeglasses come in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes, but this wasn't always the case. Years ago, before optical-quality glass had been developed, quartz was used for eyeglass lenses. For many years all lenses for eyeglasses were made of glass. However, thanks to today's polymers, a variety of plastic lenses is available. In addition, space-age plastic and metal alloys are used to make glasses frames that were once made from bone, leather or metal.
One main advantage to today's plastic eyeglass lenses is that they weigh far less than the glass lenses they replaced. In addition, most plastic lenses can be treated with various coatings to make them UV resistant and/or scratch-resistant (although NOT scratch-proof!)
Lens types that are currently available include polycarbonate lenses. They are impact-resistant. They make a perfect choice for people who are involved in sports or work where eyeglasses can be easily broken. Polycarbonate lenses are also a great choice for kids! In addition to being impact-resistant, polycarbonate lenses also offer UV protection for your eyes.
Photochromic lenses such as Transitions allow eyeglasses to go from clear to tinted as you move into and out of the sun or other bright light. They ALMOST eliminate the need for sunglasses. However, it's always best to use darkly tinted sunglasses when spending a great deal of time in the sun (especially if you're on the water.)
Polarized sunglasses reduce the glare coming off the surface of water or even while driving in strong sunlight. However, it has been reported that polarizing lenses may cause the dashboard instruments on some newer vehicles to become invisible.
Trivex lenses are made from a new high-tech plastic that is similar to polycarbonate, but may provide improved vision for some patients.
Aspheric lenses are unique because they use continuous curvature over the surface of the lens that provides a much larger are for vision correction than standard lenses for eyeglasses.
Other lenses for eyeglasses include bifocals that basically divide the lenses into upper and lower sections. The upper section corrects distance vision and the lower corrects vision at an arm's length. Of course, you can stop in at OneWay Eyeglasses Asheville anytime and Diana Seebo would be happy to answer all of your questions!
